Fire Needle Technique: Acupuncture Archives Episode 3

Fire Needle Technique

Fire Needle technique is a special technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture where the needle is first heated by direct exposure to flame before it is inserted into the patient.  This is different from warm needle technique because in warm needle the practitioner put some moxa on the handle and lights the moxa.

Why a difference?  The Huangdi Neijing (an ancient book on acupuncture) says that strong fire scatters qi, while mild warmth gives birth to qi.  Mild heat can tonify deficiencies, but we need a strong heat to scatter accumulations such as cold.  Of course, we cannot put a flame directly on the patient can we? (Actually…)

In case you’re wondering, the insertion of the needle doesn’t hurt at all.  Once the needle is retained, though, the patient usually feels the heat inside the body.  This may be disconcerting for some, but the results are quite pleasant.
